DeConstructionist
Job Summary: A project of The ReBuilding
Center of Our United Villages, DeConstruction Services disassembles
unwanted buildings and structures of all sizes, salvaging materials
for reuse and recycling. The deconstructionist works to safely
and efficiently hand-deconstruct building structures, maximizing
reuse of construction materials and diversion of demolition
waste.
Primary Responsibilities and Duties
• Hand-deconstruct building structures, including: surface
salvage, structural and nonstructural disassembly of interior
and exterior building surfaces and framing; handle recycling
and waste materials; prepare and load salvaged product.
•
Actively participate in all assigned DeCon meetings and promote
and practice good communication.
•
Inform appropriate DeCon staff of safety and scheduling needs,
requests, and recommendations.
•
Arrive at job sites on time with required personal tools and
safety equipment.
•
Follow supervisory directions and request clarification as
needed.
•
Help maintain safe, clean and orderly job sites by coordinating
and cooperating with co-workers.
•
Contribute to a safe and healthy work environment by practicing
written and verbal procedures, rules, regulations and employee
policy handbook guidelines.
•
Contribute to the efforts of DeConstruction and The ReBuilding
Center by accomplishing all related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Three or more years experience in general construction labor. (General
labor in roofing, masonry or commercial landscaping background is helpful.)
•
Lift up to 100+ lbs throughout the workday. Demonstrated expertise in safe and
efficient lifting techniques
•
Conduct repeated movement -- including prying, gripping, working overhead, climbing,
stooping, kneeling, crawling, and other related tasks throughout an 8 hour work
day.
•
When required wear a hard hat, safety glasses, steel toed and soled shoes, gloves,
ear protection, and a half mask, negative pressure, air-filtering respirator
(as determined by a doctor).
•
Ability to work in all outdoor elements and conditions.
•
Enjoy physically demanding labor.
•
Self-motivated, reliable, enthusiastic.
•
Demonstrate grace and humor under pressure.
•
Enjoy working with people from diverse backgrounds.
Pluses:
• Experience with electric and pneumatic tools.
•
Knowledge of used building materials and deconstruction methods.
•
Bi-Lingual English/Spanish fluency.
•
Reside in north/northeast Portland.
Compensation: Hourly rate based on experience.
Includes full medical and dental benefits after 90 days of employment.
