2025 Salvage showdown

December Artist Spotlight

This summer, we asked 14 local artists, builders, and makers what they could do with $100 of salvaged materials from the ReBuilding Center. They came to our store and sought inspiration from old-growth lumber, hardwood floors, and antique fixtures - all rescued from the landfill. And they created beautiful, functional, pieces of art.

We came together at the Salvage Showdown in September to celebrate reuse, and vote on the winner of the Scrappy Award. 8 of the amazing builds were sold at a live auction, raising thousands to support Portland’s heart of community-based reuse.

But we held back some of the best builds to raffle off to all of you!

The console is designed to sit below a wall mounted large flatscreen TV.  The spaces are 13.5 inches and 6.3 inches tall.  Perfect for remotes, gaming consoles, audio components, Wi-Fi router, and especially suited for a vinyl record collection and a thin long sound bar.  Comes with an adjustable shelf for the lower middle space, a white 12 plug 4 USB power strip, and transparent doors that work with remote controls.

Through the RBC, Jon helps divert discarded doors from the landfill, preserving their embodied energy, and gently reshape them with minimal cutting waste into something simple, modern, functional, and beautiful.

A $15 donation will earn you 1 entry, $30 will get you 2 entries, and so on. Winner will be announced in early January!

Jon taguchi

Our December Artist Spotlight is shining on Jon Taguchi! Jon set out to turn something unloved and discarded into a quality piece of furniture - so he chose to repurpose hollow core doors. While many scorn hollow core doors, in reality, they are stable, geometric slabs of handsome wood veneer and a lightweight, minimalist solid wood frame with a signature honeycomb corrugated paper board core - making the material rigid enough to hold some weight.

ABout the artist

Jon has been shopping at the ReBuilding Center for almost as long as we have been on Mississippi Ave! He was immediately drawn in by the reclaimed windows and doors that let light shine in to our warehouse store - “The artful composition of windows and glass doors is modern, simple, and beautifully embodies the RBC mission.” He kept coming because he loves what we do here - slowing down the cycle of waste that dominates our society.

Jon is a retired product designer - creating headwear, bags, and more. He brought that creative vision and passion for thoughtful design to the Salvage Showdown this year. He built this media console with borrowed tools in a friend’s driveway - embodying the ReBuilding Center’s scrappy energy.
