In 2021, we at ReBuilding Center grew to see ourselves as a climate justice organization. Since our founding in 1997, ReBuilding Center has prided itself on the amount of material we keep out of landfills. But until recently, we didn’t talk about how reuse and repair can be tools for justice.

We are still the funky, fabulous treasure trove of hidden gems, preserving Portland architectural history and moving useful building materials and home goods out of the waste stream and into the hands of the people who need them. Now, however, in addition to keeping tons of material out of landfills, we have a greater purpose that centers PEOPLE in addition to climate.
