Intermediate Electrical: Light Fixtures

Brighten up your life with a new light fixture! Wall and ceiling lights can be simple or ornate, but behind the scenes there are (usually) some standardized parts and typical wiring configurations.

This is a skills-based class where you will learn how to use tools and replace lamps with a mix of hands-on tasks and demonstrations, but you will not build a project to take home.

Topics covered: 

  • Common light fixtures and mounting hardware 

  • Types of boxes & enclosures 

  • Typical cabling & switching configurations 

  • How to identify hot, neutral and switched conductors

  • Testing & troubleshooting

Skill level: This is an intermediate class. We STRONGLY recommend that you take Intro to Electrical: Safety and Simple Repairs before registering for this class. Students in this class are expected to be familiar with the following concepts and skills:

  • Hot, Neutral & Ground - what they do and how to identify them

  • Basic circuit theory

  • Household wiring types

  • Using a non-contact voltage tester

  • Using wire strippers; Making good connections and splices

For ages 18+ as well as 16 and 17 year-olds with parent or guardian permission.

Class schedule: Class will run for 3 hours with no break planned

Build a Lamp

Learn basic electrical skills and lamp repair, and build a table lamp to take home! Class will start by taking apart lamps provided in class to learn how all the pieces fit together. Next, students can choose from our selection of reclaimed wood and electrical parts to create their own lamp.

Students will be given basic bulbs to take home as part of their lamp, but decorative or specialty bulbs (like the one in the picture below) are BYOB: Bring Your Own Bulb.

Topics covered:

  • The basics of electrical theory

  • Safety when working with electricity

  • Using wire stripping tools effectively

  • The parts and techniques necessary to rewire and repair a lamp

  • Inspiration for how to create lamps out of other types of materials

Skill level: This class is ideal for beginners ages 18 and over as well as 16 and 17 year-olds with parent or guardian permission.

Class Schedule: Class will run for 3 hours and no breaks are planned

Intermediate Electrical: GFCIs

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) are an important safety feature in your home! Required by building code to be on circuits near water such as in bathrooms and kitchens. They can also be retrofitted in older homes to add extra safety.

This is a skills-based class where you will learn how to use tools with a mix of hands-on tasks and demonstrations, but you will not build a project to take home.

Topics covered: 

  • Basic Theory: How GFCIs work and why they’re so important

  • Where they are required in new construction, and where they’re recommended for existing, older homes

  • How to identify the beginning of a circuit

  • How to identify Line vs. Load conductors

  • Replacing a standard receptacle with a GFCI

  • Testing GFCIs
