Creative Reuse: Scavenged-Object Sculpture

This class is taught by local artist Pam Consear from All Hands Art!

In this 3-hour workshop, we’ll exercise our creative muscles by asking “what else could this be?” Through the lens of imagination, hose nozzles become bird beaks and washers make eyes… or open mouths or hair curls. Combine hardware and plumbing supplies to create human-like figures or animals, or take your sculpture in a more abstract direction.

We'll begin by looking at examples of scavenged-object sculptures, then go treasure hunting in the ReBuilding Center store (each student will receive $10 store credit included with their registration)! With your new finds, supplemented by Pam’s extensive collection of random objects, we’ll assemble our creations using wire, nails, acrylic gel medium, caulking glue, and other low-tech, no-heat fasteners — no soldering or welding, and I’m not a fan of hot glue because it doesn’t last very long.

Depending on the materials you choose, your creation can become yard art or indoor decor. You’ll enjoy exploring where the materials take you, and remember: there are no wrong answers when you’re working with cast-offs. It’s about seeing new possibilities in old things, which is a great skill to develop as we head into an increasingly wobbly future. We’ll cultivate fresh ways of looking at what others might regard as, well, a pile of junk (or maybe a broken system).

You may also bring some personal doodads or memorabilia from home to use in your art piece. Wire, glues, and many odd cast-offs will be provided.

Skill level: For ages 18+ as well as 16 and 17 year-olds with parent or guardian permission; no art background is required.

Class Schedule: Class will run for 3 hours with no break planned.

Note: Not all materials shown in the photos will be available in class, and you are welcome to bring your own items.
